In 2024, Ecuador made history by connecting its first floating photovoltaic (PV) plant, located at a shrimp farm in Puerto Inca, Guayas. The plant, with a power output of 302.4 kW, was developed by GPS Groups in collaboration with Eco Green Energy. Floating on canals instead of land, the plant addresses the local shrimp farming industry’s need to preserve valuable farmland. This innovative solution allows energy generation without sacrificing space for shrimp production, marking a significant achievement in renewable energy for the region.
Challenge
Building the floating PV plant came with several challenges. One major hurdle was ensuring the solar panels didn’t interfere with the operations of the shrimp farm. The project had to be carefully designed to float on canals without disrupting shrimp production, as well as withstand the environmental conditions of the area. Additionally, selecting panels capable of resisting saltwater corrosion and supporting the plant’s floating structure added complexity. These challenges required specialized planning and collaboration between Eco Green Energy and GPS Groups to ensure long-term viability.
Our Solution
To meet these challenges, Eco Green Energy provided technical guidance in selecting durable solar panels for the floating system. The panels chosen had a special certification for salt corrosion resistance, making them ideal for the water-based environment. Their lightweight structure also ensured stability on the floating platform. Collaborating with local experts, the project team positioned the plant on existing canals to avoid any disruption to shrimp farming. This innovative solution provided clean energy while preserving the land for shrimp production, showcasing a sustainable approach that balanced both energy needs and local industry priorities.
